Andrew Duff visit to North Cyprus: 'EU must deal fairly with Turkish Cypriots'

Andrew Duff MEP, Vice-President of the Joint Parliamentary Committee for EU-Turkey relations, will be visiting North Cyprus on Monday 7 February.

During his visit he will have meetings with President Denktash, Prime Minister Talat and other political and business leaders.

Commenting on the trip, Andrew Duff said:

"The Greek Cypriot government is blocking the European Union's attempt to open up trade and investment with North Cyprus. This is contrary to its duty as a member of the Council to support European integration. It is also a studied insult to the Turkish Cypriots who voted overwhelmingly to support the Annan Plan to re-unite the divided island.

"My visit will explore ways to overcome Greek Cypriot opposition to ending the partition of the island. I will also explore what can be done to reassure moderate Greek Cypriot opinion about the sincerity of Turkey's intentions over Cyprus."

Mr Duff will be accompanied on his visit by Chris Davies MEP, leader of the UK Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament, and by his political adviser Guillaume McLaughlin.
